Message from the President
I am glad you have decided to take a
closer look at Pendleton. We are proud of
our community and what it has to offer.
Whether you are looking for vacation
possibilities or looking for a place to move
your family or your business, I am confident
you find what you are looking for and even a
few surprises.
Pendleton may be world famous due to the
Pendleton Round-Up, held the second full
week of September each year, but what really
sets Pendleton apart from other communities
of like size is our quality of life. I
challenge you to find another place on earth
with the same attributes. From the start
you’ll realize that you are in a special
place. There’s a spirit in Pendleton that
cannot be described…it has to be felt.
The town of Pendleton has been "put on the
map" more than once, from the founder of the
city, George Hunt Pendleton, to the
Pendleton Woolen Mills. One attribute of the
city that stands alone is the world famous
rodeo for which Pendleton has received world
wide acclaim. The Pendleton Round-Up began
as a gathering of local ranch hands in 1910,
eager to test their mettle in organized
cowboy competition. From that, the Pendleton
Round-Up has blossomed in to one of the
largest and most renowned, prestigious
rodeos in the world. The thanks for that
belong in large part to the citizens of
Pendleton. Each year, as in a large family
gathering, hundreds draw together to
volunteer and produce this esteemed rodeo.
The Pendleton Round-Up and the Happy Canyon
Night Show would have long since ceased to
exist without the volunteers from Pendleton
and the region. Nowhere else in the world
can you point to an annual example of
partnership and camaraderie working together
to accomplish a singular goal that can match
what happens here…you simply have to
experience it to believe it.
If you’re feeling like you need a vacation,
the opportunities that Pendleton affords are
limitless. First, find a room at any one of
the well managed, clean, comfortable hotels
or motels in the area. Then, it’s just a
matter of deciding what to do first. For the
shopper, the possibilities are limitless!
From antiquities, modern fashions, authentic
western wear, to jewelry, sporting
equipment, shoes and so much more are all
right here. And you’re sure to find a
helpful, friendly person willing to provide
you the best in customer service that you
won’t find at a huge department store. You
can experience the best in Las Vegas style
gaming at Wildhorse Resort and Casino. The
Blue Mountains to the south offer limitless
possibilities from camping to hiking,
hunting, berry picking, and the freshest air
for miles around. To the north, you’ll soon
run into the mighty Columbia River, with its
renowned fishing, boating and camping
possibilities. If you’re up for a bike ride
or a Sunday drive, you’ll find the most
beautiful scenery. Rolling wheat fields,
majestic mountains, beautiful blue water and
topography that is unique to Pendleton
alone. Play a round of golf at either or
both challenging, well maintained 18 hole
courses. Catch a concert from either or both
of our local symphonies. Explore the history
of the region and its people at The Umatilla
County Historical Society, Tamastslikt
Cultural Institute, or The Pendleton
Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame.
Hungry yet? From a fabulous steak to gourmet
options, something quick, or something
different, Pendleton’s numerous eateries
will leave you satisfied, happy, and
planning your next great meal as soon as the
one you’re enjoying is finished.
Another one of the strengths of Pendleton is
it’s economic diversity. A strong economy
with it’s foundation in agriculture,
Pendleton and the region has a dynamic
makeup that will be strong for your business
and for the future. The gateway to business
and the county seat, Pendleton is the place
to be for business. Projects are underway
right now to ensure this economic diversity
continues. The Barnhart Road project will
allow the city of Pendleton to attract more
business by utilizing industrial land near
the airport. The Confederated Tribes of the
Umatilla Indian Reservation have attracted
two Fortune 500 companies to the new Coyote
Business Park just outside of Pendleton.
These are just two examples of the
investment in Pendleton’s business future.
From small business support, a strong
chamber behind you, to available, hard
working, qualified employees, I’m confident
Pendleton will be the gateway to your
success.
In conclusion, thank you again for taking a
closer look at Pendleton. We have so much to
offer that it’s difficult to showcase every
single thing that makes Pendleton a truly
special place. And remember, The Pendleton
Chamber of Commerce is the only organization
in the area whose principle goal is to
create a strong local economy. I encourage
you to utilize the chamber and all that our
office has to offer. If you’re new to the
area, we want you to feel welcome,
successful, and to feel like you’re an
integral part of our community from the
start. If you’ve lived here for years, we
want you to take another look at all your
chamber can do for you. I’m looking forward
to seeing you in Pendleton!
